Advice from the Boston Globe today about getting ready to face the critters.

How to shoo pesky critters from your garden

The pitched battle between gardeners and wildlife began in earnest as warmer weather finally arrived, and the humans are arming themselves with an arsenal of approaches.

“There are some pretty aggressive, determined animals out there who want your foliage; they’re hungry,” said Matthew Gramer, president of NatureWorks Landscape Services in Walpole. “So you have to be on your game.”
Gramer recommends starting by planting varieties that wildlife don’t like.

Welcome to 2015! Sign up now for the Flerra Community Garden.

Hello everyone!

We hope you're ready to join us again at the Flerra Community Garden after that long winter. Welcome back! We look forward to seeing you all.

If you haven't signed up yet, please contact our Town Planner, Adam L. Duchesneau, by calling 978-264-1723 or emailing him at ADuchesneau@Boxborough-MA.gov. Adam can provide you with the garden rules and an application.

We have 10 x 20 ($20) and 20 x 20 ($30) plots. Application fees to toward garden supplies, including the perimeter fence.

The season starts late this year, because the ground is cold. We expect to have the fence up by end-of-day Saturday, 9-May, and a plot map available by Sunday 10-May. If you can help, please send us an email to flerragarden@gmail.com! Pitching is in an important!

News for 2015:

  • We will do our best to provide returning gardeners with the plot of their choice. If you've signed up, please let us know your preference. Sunday 10-May will be the last day your old plot is guaranteed.
  • We expect to have a delivery of composted horse manure again this year available for everyone.
  • The Conservation Commission is interested in improving the well. This would mean re-digging the well and reconstructing it underground, which should make it function much better, for much longer. There may be some water-toting (from home or from the pond) in the meantime.
  • The garden cart is aging and needs parts. We will be ordering them and repairing the cart, and there may be a week or so delay while we wait for them.
  • We are always looking for good used garden tools (shovels, rakes, hoes, stirrup hoes, spades, etc.). If you find yourself at a yard sale and want to pitch in, please do! Let us know.
  • Any ideas you guys have about garden management, community projects (corn rows, vacation coverage, etc.).
  • Please share news of the garden. We welcome new gardeners!
